Hovering Housing
architecture concept
In a city where flooding occurs often, the goal of Hovering Housing is to guarantee that those who live in the space are safe from potential flooding. The goal of this intentional community is to mitigate risk due to natural disasters as well as creating a low carbon footprint. Majority of the units are the same size with a variety of 4 layouts. For the apartments, the earth is only touched by the central core and staircase which allows for majority of the community space to be open.
Hovering Housing aims to create a safe space for people of all ages. Children have the freedom to play safely outside, students and people in the workforce have privacy to focus, and residents have functional homes and kitchens which they can use to spend time with family and friends. Another goal of the project is to connect the community to the surrounding context whether that be through the park across the street, or heavy traffic on Tchoupitoulas St. The community will have an open garden space in direct relation to the baseball field across the street, where anyone can play with family and friends.
On Tchoupitoulas there will be community owned establishments that can employ residents. This community will also have plenty of natural light and green spaces so residents can enjoy home grown vegetables and a sunny spring day in New Orleans. Overall, the goal of this project is to create an environmentally friendly community where residents feel safe, positively connected to one another, and comfortable in their day to day lives.
