Horizontal Home
architecture concept
In order to add additional space to the horizontal home, it was important to think about the spaces that were already exposed to the elements. The focus of this project was to increase the exterior space. Increasing the exterior space allows for the residents to use that space more freely as well as using the exterior space for a variety of activities. The kitchen already had a view of a patio, and the patio is already connected to two bedrooms as well. Since the kitchen patio is a main space where people can sit and relax, the space would be even more beneficial once the square footage was doubled. Doubling the square footage allows for more people to use the space at once. Creating more exterior space also allows for the garden to be bigger, providing more food and beautiful plants for the residents. The wooden deck also has a canopy over it that provides shade.
The wooden deck spaces provide more structure for the residents which can be used more easily as a work space or dining area. The shared patio for the bedrooms on the east of the building was greatly increased with a big wooden deck that can function as a home gym space. The exercise space is separated from the outside and is a sort of winter garden. The doors on both ends allow for easy access to the outdoors. The doors also provide a breeze and can be left open in order to keep the space less hot. The deck can also be used to host gatherings of big groups of people and is connected to another garden space which is great for people to play outside. Lastly, the garden space that is closest to the piano was also increased in size while keeping a more intimate feeling.
The aim for the piano space was to make the exterior condition feel cozy and less open than the other exterior spaces. While exterior space can be beneficial when it is big, smaller exterior spaces can provide a sense of security which people should be able to feel within their home. Overall, the aim for this project was to create a variety of exterior spaces that can be used to serve different functions and a variety of needs.
